This is where the friends of the Almanac hang out

Thank you for helping! I'm truly grateful to each and every member who ongo-bongos for the Almanac.

My ongo-bongos are below. The newest are at the top of each table, and due to lack of space I'll remove items as they're satisfied.

I value your support very much and hope not to disregard it, ever.
I usually answer correspondence within 48 hours. If I don't, try again and flag your email if possible. If you don't get a reply in several days, I didn't get your email. I get a few hundred emails a day, so please don't give up on me.

Abundance and gratitude,

Pip

PS Where possible, give complete details: URL, publisher, author, date ... whatever you can ongo-bongo with. It might help my filing if you put 'Ongo-Bongo' and another word or two (eg, Info on Lincoln's significant dates) in the subject header.

INFO please - Calendar related
  • Calendar related table: Information that can be tied to a particular date or day of the year. E.g., if it says John Brown, I would like to receive significant dates associated with his life. Sending me a URL or list of URLs is kind, but remember that I can also go to www.google.com and google up a word. It's the time to search the pages that's hardest to find. That's why I really appreciate snippets like the sample in the box above.

  • If you can provide a web URL (address) or other reference, to confirm and to check copyrights, that would be appreciated too.

  • Info that can be directly slotted into my database of dates is great.

Noche Triste and the Festival of Tóxcatl ***
Since I wrote my piece on Cortes, I've been trying to find the date/s of Noche Triste and the (ten-day?) Festival of Tóxcatl to the god Huitzilopochtli when Aztec/Spanish massacres occurred in 1520 at Tenochtitlán, Mexico. Books and websites I've been searching have given me a variety of dates, from June 30 to July 12 (one site even has June 31!!)

I would appreciate any help with this, and any information about the fiesta and its place in the calendar. Thanx, folks.
From the Diggers and Levellers to Findhorn ***Dates for these two early anarchist-style groups in England. Also the Diggers of San Francisco, 1960s please. Other communities like the Hog Farm, The Farm, New Alchemy Institute, Findhorn etc.
Nimbin ***Dates in the (alternative/hippie) chronology of Nimbin, Australia.
Bill Mollison **The Permaculture man; birthday/other dates.
Martin Sharp **Australian artist; I'm after his birthday/other dates.
The Human Fly * Harry 'The Human Fly' Gardiner      http://www.hpl.hamilton.on.ca/Collections/downtown/bnkham.htm and http://www.detnews.com/history/fly/fly.htm also http://www.michiganhistorymagazine.com/detroit/pdf/so99lee.pdf

... I'm after his date of birth, other significant dates and events in his life, date of death. Any images not on the three websites above.

Peace heroes **Dates in the lives of people remembered for their stand for peace and against war.
Dates mentioned in literature **Like these:
So long had life together been that now
The second of January fell again
On Tuesday ...
Joseph Brodsky, Six Years Later

Now I suffer from vertigo, and today, 23rd of January, 1862, I have received a singular warning. I have felt the wind of the wing of madness pass over me.

Charles Baudelaire, Intimate Journals

On the ninth of January, now four days ago, I received by the evening delivery a registered envelope, addressed in the hand of my colleague and old school-companion, Henry Jekyll.
Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

Aborigines **** It's hard to put Gregorian (Western) calendar dates to times in the year of indigenous peoples from around the world, such as Australia's Aborigines. Can you help?

Your generous votes at these links are always appreciated

INFO please - GeneralComments
Tasmanian Monster ***http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/2666/taz-thing.html has the only reference I could find on the Web about the strange 'thing' found on a Tasmanian beach in the mid-1960s. Anybody have any sources?

Later: I found another reference at http://www.mysterymag.com/html/unknown_sea_creatures.html which mentions 1960. My memory of the 1960s monster is that it looked very much like the 'monster' shown at http://www.mysterymag.com/html/newfoundland_blobster.html

'Bible Fraud' by Tony Bushby *Looking for confirmation or refutation of the assertions by Tony Busby at http://www.nexusmagazine.com/biblefraud1.html
Hindu/Jewish/Christian scriptures *Can anyone verify the assertions and the scriptural citations at http://www.viewzone.com/noah.story.html
South-East Asian regime crimes **I'm after documented facts and figures of the crimes against humanity by the Communist regimes of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, and numbers of refugees, including numbers of 'boat people' who died at sea; numbers of citizens imprisoned in 're-education' concentration camps.
Peace movement/Aid/human rights ***I'd like to publish a special edition that people can save: a list of 100s of URLs of peace, aid and human rights organisations
Exercise/chores ***   I want to write a very controversial article comparing the relative health benefits of exercise with helping disabled people with the chores. Click for more
Java/DHTML ****I have several java/DHTML problems and queries and would like to discuss these with someone who has a java brain.
Gulf War *URLs to pages that have estimates of the number of casualties in Gulf War I.

GRAPHICS please Comments
Chambers's Book of Days***Before I had a scanner ... before the Internet almost -- I photocopied images from Robert Chambers's Book of Days. Nice old etchings about calendar customs, etc. Now they're all online (no copyright) at http://www.library.wisc.edu/etext/BookofDays/ but it's a time-consuming job to get them all, especially as I have a dial-up modem. If you would like to save the images for the Almanac, let me know and I'll tell you how I would prefer them to be named. They look great in the Almy from time to time.

I have a few, just like to keep adding.

Miscellaneous pleaseComments
Boring but easy: inviting websites to webring ****Peace Planet Webring: can someone give me a hand inviting websites to join? It's dead easy, as Webrings does the mailing, but we need to type in one email address at a time, then click Send. Someone who is prepared to locate the webmaster's email from the list of websites I already have. Thank you, it would be a great help!
Peace website addresses: indexing ***See Our BIG directory of 1,000+ peace-related URLs --
this is a valuable resource and available for personal use and free of charge to groups or individuals who wish to use it on their website. It is arranged alphabetically, but requires indexing by themes. Is this up your alley? The sooner, the better due to the urgency of the war situation.
Peace Planet Webring ***We now have our own webring. Could you ask a few webmasters to join? They have to have peace/environment or appropriate sites. All they have to do is click the Scriptorium homepage http://www.wilsonsalmanac.com and scroll down to the dove, then join. It's free and simple, like me. Please join up yourself, and tell other webmasters the benefits of our sites joining together.
Buy a Wilson's Almanac mug and T-shirt *****http://www.cafeshops.com/cafe_diem
Quotations **Quotes on peace, alternatives, self-reliance and self-determination; other subjects as promoted in the Almanac and Almost Prophetic Quotations. As with other Ongo-Bongos, I'm grateful if you save them up and send in batches, to save correspondence work for us both. Thank you.
Young readers *****As I'm sure you know, one of the main raisons d'être of the Almy is to help change the world and promote peace, etc. I have little faith or interest in trying to change the minds of older people. I'm passionate about reaching under-30s. And I'm really very keen to get your ideas and support so that our positive messages can reach young people.
Indymedia *****
There are Indymedia websites for dozens of places in the world. See the list on the left of the page of the main site, http://www.indymedia.org

You are allowed to upload original material at these sites.

I do political cartoons, animations and articles. I could use a hand posting these at Indymedia sites. It's easy to do, and I can show you how in a minute. I'd need to provide you with whatever it is I want uploaded at present.

STOP PRESS, Feb 7: The article "Myths of the 'War on Terrorism'" ... I have uploaded some to indys, but would LOVE lots of help to do more. This article is a very comprehensive list of myths about the war, and should get out soon. Some of its info will age with time. Can you spare an hour?

Quotes editing **This is a pretty big job. Too damn big for me. I'm up to my ears in inspirational, progressive quotes -- thousands of them, which I share in the Almy and, with J-9, in APQ. Lordy, lordy, but they need indexing by someone with some skills!!
Do a column **If someone would like to do a small, regular column in the Almanac (much as Almaniac Jeannine Wilson in USA does Daily Planet News, and Teresa Ford's F Files), I am open to suggestions. Naturally, I can't take just anyone on - I would have to be persuaded of its worth and reliability. however, I'd love to widen the Almy in this way. A couple of suggestion: seasonal changes in Nature in your part of the world, or even your backyard; website reviews; simple pagan/esoteric rituals that can go with certain days of the year. (I have several now, from several continents, but still want columns from Africa, Asia and South America.)

A column could be more or less regular than weekly, but weekly might be a good start. Space is short; so should the column be. Write to me.

Wanted for Planet Directory *****Unpaid, unsung part-time help with the Planet Directory would be very much appreciated. There are more than 3,700 websites in this directory, and over 284 link partners. If you can combine diplomacy with a feel for alternative websites, I'm busting to make the PD the best progressive directory on the Net, and would love your help, just for a short while. The task would include writing reviews of about 15 words each, and asking link partners to update the link URL as some of them still have the old one. Maybe some reader who digs the PD has some free time; I wish I had some myself but other almanac duties have me tied up. Thanx.
Awards ***I'm not into self-nominating for awards for this site ... mainly because I'm flat out like a lizard drinking, with everything else that needs doing. However, I am always grateful if members nominate Wilson's Almanac for awards, online or otherwise, and it helps promote the work.
Directories *****

Looking for online directories in which I can list Wilson's Almanac for free. Eg, http://www.ugrin.com/ , www.fun-lists.com

How to ongo facts to the Almanac database
(People who have agreed to exchange something with me
for a free subscription to the premium Aiders & Abetters Almanac)

If you don't see anything in the tables above that appeals to you, you can choose one of your own favourite subjects (if it seems like an Almanac-style of subject) and send me items for the database in the following format (I file things by date, not by subject or year, so please try to fit this format, thank you very much. However, I will accept them in any form if too hard. To minimise correspondence work for us both, perhaps you could save your material in bundles that you send occasionally. Thanx, folks.)

“Mayan rulers used numbers in their names. This could be "Eighteen Rabbit" or "Eighteen Gopher Provider", there is still debate about the translation. David Stuart reads the name as Waxaklahun Ubah K'awil. which he translates as "18 are the bodies of K'awil". Represented by a rabbit or a gopher, K'awil is the god associated with kingship.
His reign began in 695 AD and ended with his death on May 3, 738. He was killed in a battle with the city of Quirigua, or he may have been captured and sacrificed. The event is referred to as the "axing" of 18 Rabbit.”
