Greetings from Emerald Beach (near Coffs Harbour), Australia!
And welcome to the Scriptorium.
1) WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND WILSON’S ALMANAC?
Wilson’s Almanac (WA) started as Pip Wilson’s hobby. Pip, who lives at Emerald Beach, NSW, Australia (about 600 km, or 350 miles, north of Sydney), has been collecting data for about 30 years, sometimes assiduously, and sometimes not.Potted history of our first five years
On January 1, 2001, Pip launched the daily emailed almanac with Yahoo! Groups, and a subscriber of just one (Pip). Slowly the almanac grew. Very slowly, as this was done on less than a shoestring. By March 2001, there were still only 22 readers. But by January 1, 2004, more than 2,600 people worldwide were subscribers. Now there are more than 3,000 fully searchable pages in this project. If you would like to see what members think of 'the Almy', read these unsolicited readers' comments.
(By the way, at any one time there are usually at least 500 members who are 'bouncing' – i.e., The ezine
bouncing back because their mailbox is full. So you can add at least 500 to the official membership number
shown at our Yahoo! Groups page, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WilsonsAlmanac )Bouncing? You might be bouncing if you haven't received an almanac for a while.
This is usually Yahoo's response to your email in-tray being full or nearly full. The Yahoo policy is quite strict about bouncers and I can't always help you.
- Visit http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups
- Look for a bounce alert near the top of the page.
- Click the Alert link to reactivate your account.
- Alternatively, do this at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wilsonsalmanac or http://groups.yahoo.com/wilsonsalmanac/join
- If that doesn't work (please try first), email Pip.
2) WHY SO BIG?!
A poll of readers showed that 87.25% wanted no reduction in size (and it was three times bigger then when the poll was taken). Just read the bits you want. Those who want a lighter version can choose Daily Digest at http://groups.yahoo.com/wilsonsalmanac, then click Edit My Membership. You must already be a member and logged in first to 'Edit Membership'.
3) IS WA A BUSINESS?
It is intended to receive revenues through advertising and sales through the
almanac emails and website. Income will help your almanac to keep improving.Very little revenue is received this way. I make about $2 per week in Amazon.com sales.
Your daily ezine comes to you by voluntary paid subscription. Please see http://www.wilsonsalmanac.com/subs.htmlOnce you've seen a few issues of the almanac, I trust you'll see how different it is from most ezines,
and why a small payment for it is a reasonable request.
4) HOW OFTEN DOES WA COME OUT?
Pip sends out WA every day of the year, though every once in a while one might not be sent
(Internet connection problems, personal reasons etc).
5) HOW CAN I GET THE ALMANAC WITH COLOUR, LINKS, ETC?
Wilson's Almanac is enjoyed every day by hundreds of members who own
average computers and common email browsers such as Microsoft Outlook Express.
If you've had trouble receiving a full-colour daily almanac with useful hyperlinks to fascinating
websites, it is likely the problems need to be attended to at your end.
There's a number of possible reasons for delivery problems, each with a ready solution:
a) Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WilsonsAlmanac , click EDIT MY MEMBERSHIP
(top right-hand corner) and under MESSAGE DELIVERY choose "Individual Emails" AND "HTML Conversion".Only members who have chosen INDIVIDUAL EMAILS at EDIT MY MEMBERSHIP will
see the full daily almanac. If you DON'T want pictures etc, choose DAILY DIGEST.You should also be able to do this at http://groups.yahoo.com/wilsonsalmanac/join
b) If you get the Daily Digest, to get hyperlinks, your email browser (eg Outlook Express) must be set for
receiving HTML. Edit your settings at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WilsonsAlmanac EDIT MY MEMBERSHIP.
c) A possible reason for viewing difficulties is that some Internet Service
Providers (ISPs) and web-based browsers are not as good as others. AOL, for example, is notoriously
bad and many listowners recommend avoiding it. It's easy to open a free email
account on the Web, and this might solve your problem. However, web-based emails such as yahoo and Hotmail,
don't show the almy with all its features, such as floating images or background sounds, etc.Like most ezines, the almy works best with an Outlook Express browser or similar.
6) WHAT IF I WANT TO SEE A PREVIOUS ALMANAC?
There is an archive at the Yahoo! Groups homepage http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WilsonsAlmanac/
7) A FRIEND FORWARDED ME YOUR ALMANAC LAST WEEK.
THE MOON PHASE SEEMS INCORRECT.
The moon phase graphic is at the top of the 'Almy'. It should show the CURRENT PHASE, even if you open the almanac days or weeks late.
You are seeing a new almanac through the window of an old almanac window.
8) CAN YOU CHANGE MY SETTINGS FOR ME?
It's conventional for e-list subscribers to manage their own accounts, including unsubscriptions,
so I'm grateful if you don't ask me to change your settings or unsubscribe you UNLESS you have tried and failed.
9) WHAT IF I REALLY CAN'T CHANGE MY SETTINGS?
If, after trying the suggestions listed above, you still have problems, please email your almanackist and clearly state your problem in the Subject Header AND body of your email. There is an email contact in the header of Scriptorium pages.
This is the only way to grab Pip's notoriously limited attention amongst the hundreds of emails he receives each
day. Your almanackist values each member’s enjoyment of the fruits of his labour, so if he can possibly help, he certainly will.
10) HOW CAN I UNSUBSCRIBE?
The footer of every email has simple Unsubscribe instructions. If you do not wish to belong to the group, or if you have been
added in error (for which your almanackist apologises), you may unsubscribe by sending a blank email to
WilsonsAlmanac-unsubscribe@egroups.com (put it in the address box please, nothing in the Subject Header!)
11) HOW DO I CHANGE MY EMAIL ADDRESS WITH YOU?
Simple:
a) FIRST UNSUBSCRIBE. Using your OLD email address, send a blank email to
WilsonsAlmanac-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com
b) NOW RE-SUBSCRIBE. Using your NEW email address, send a blank email to
WilsonsAlmanac-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
12) DOES WA ACCEPT ADVERTISING?
Yes. Wilson's Almanac is happy to hear from prospective advertisers.
13) I WOULD LIKE AN AD WITHOUT PAYING -- CAN I GET ONE ON 'CONTRA'?
Yes, contras (exchange of commodities or services for advertising) could well be accepted. Goods or services
suitable for use as WA prizes are welcome.
14) HOW CAN I GET MY FRIENDS TO JOIN?
The best way to arrange a subscription is to ask them to send a blank email to
WilsonsAlmanac-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
15) HOW CAN I HELP YOUR PROJECT?
a) Please see http://www.wilsonsalmanac.com/help.html. Forwarding almanacs is also a great way to help. Inviting friends to join is another. If you have a website, you can place a small button or subscription box
by which your readers can subscribe. It’s at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WilsonsAlmanac/promoteWebsite owners can also submit their site for listing in the WA PLANET DIRECTORY
http://www.wilsonsalmanac.com/links/themeindex.html and become a Link Partner.
WA also has several banners you can link, at http://www.wilsonsalmanac.com/linkers.html.
b) Prizes for competitions are sought.
c) It's planned to give awards for certain accomplishments of members.
These accomplishments will be such things as community service, essays and so
on. All will be with a view to improving life and the environment.
Significant awards (monetary and other) are sought by benefactors.
Please talk to your almanackist if you wish to engage in philanthropy.d) Please see http://www.wilsonsalmanac.com/help.html
16) I’M GOING ON VACATION AND DON’T WANT WA FOR A WHILE.
MUST I UNSUBSCRIBE?
No, WA would prefer you didn't, and it's quite unnecessary. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WilsonsAlmanac ,
click EDIT MY MEMBERSHIP and choose NO EMAIL (view on Web Only).
When you want the daily emails again, go back to EDIT MY MEMBERSHIP and choose INDIVIDUAL EMAILS.
17) WHY DO I GET WA ONE DAY EARLY?
Each almanac is posted on the actual day, from Emerald Beach, a quiet village in the Southern and Eastern Hemispheres,
in a nation famous for its purplish cabbages and licentious End of Dingo Mating Season Fiesta. Your time zone is probably
behind that of Eastern Standard Time, Australia. If you are in the USA, for example, you are enjoying Tuesday as much as 18 hours after we are.
Emerald Beach is 20 years and 18 hours ahead of the seat of world hegemonic power.
18) WHY DO YOU WRITE ABOUT SUMMER WHEN IT IS WINTER HERE?
Because the vast majority of members live in the Northern Hemisphere, Pip has opted to write for the majority,
despite the fact that he endures the Southern Hemisphere as, apparently, you do as well.
19) ARE YOU IN IT FOR THE MONEY?
If I were, I'd be crazy! The almanac's purpose has always been to share ideas such as planetary awareness;
conservation and sustainability; sensitivity to Nature and human cultures; the richness of calendar customs around the world
and through history; and awareness of the seasons and the effect of natural cycles on our lives. As a writer, too, I benefit by having a readership, of course. If the almanac should pay for me to continue my research and share my findings and passions, at little or no charge to members, I will be very grateful. However, I intend to keep producing WA as long as I can, regardless of income. Read more
20) DO YOU HAVE A POSTAL ADDRESS?
Yes. PO Box 1246, Coffs Harbour, NSW, 2450, AUSTRALIA.
21) WA HAS TOO MUCH CHRISTIAN STUFF, LIKE SAINTS'
FESTIVALS. AREN'T YOU ASHAMED OF YOURSELF?
No.
22) WA HAS TOO MUCH NON-CHRISTIAN STUFF, LIKE
PAGAN FESTIVALS. AREN'T YOU ASHAMED OF YOURSELF?
No.
23) WHAT DO I DO IF I FIND AN ERROR IN THE ALMY?
Tell me at Corrigenda, which has a tagboard. That's also where you can just say g'day, and I'd like to hear from you.24) YOU ARE VERY PRO-PEACE. SO HOW DO YOU THINK WE CAN END WAR?
Imagination.24) WHAT DOES DIDDY-WAH DIDDY MEAN?
If you don't know, don't mess with it.
Carpe diem! Seize the day!
