Beautiful Sandy Beach

It's not a road. It's a beach.

Dear General Manager

I wish to bring to your notice some matters about Sandy Beach.
I wrote to Council about these some months ago but it seems to me that the problems have not diminished; in fact, they appear to have got worse.

1) In the park by Sandy Beach is a low post-and-rail fence on which the rails are affixed by hundreds of straps of galvanised iron. A great many of these straps are rusted, sharp and/or hanging off the posts and rails and constitute a very serious danger to anyone using the park. In my view as someone who has worked in the wards of Sydney Children’s Hospital for some years, a tragic injury is to be expected.

2) Virtually every day there are motorists using the full length of Sandy Beach as a road.

3) Virtually every day dog owners bring dogs onto the beach.

I feel that the signage about prohibitions on the beach is too small, too hidden, and lacking in information about the fines that offenders will receive. Are the fines sufficient? I would like to know what steps Council will be taking to eradicate the problems to which I refer above. Thank you very much.

Yours sincerely,

Philip Wilson

Sandy Beach - Concerns Regarding Fencing, Signage and Vehicles on the Beach

Thank you for your letter concerning Council's position on the above matters.

1 . Council is currently considering options to replace the low fence between Sandy Beach Reserve and the road. In the interim a more detailed safety inspection, targeting sharp and rusting hoop iron strapping will be conducted.

2. The vehicle access point at the southern end of Sandy Beach has a sign prohibiting vehicle access. There are general warning signs at other access points, prohibiting vehicles and dogs on the beach. Any incidences of these prohibited activities occurring on the beach should be reported to the Rangers who can be contacted at Council on 6648 4000.

3. Penalties for vehicle and dog offences are prescribed by the State Government and administered by Local Government.

For further information please contact me on 6648 4875.

Yours faithfully

Dear Mr Murray

Thank you for your reply of February 2, 2005 to my letter of January 19.

It is good to know that “detailed safety inspection, targeting sharp and rusting hoop iron strapping will be conducted” at Sandy Beach. May I please know when this is to be concluded, and may I be informed, please, when there is a further development, such as a written report? Thank you.

Sir, with respect, in regard to my questions to the General Manager (concerning dogs and cars on the beach), viz:

“I feel that the signage about prohibitions on the beach is too small, too hidden, and lacking in information about the fines that offenders will receive. Are the fines sufficient? I would like to know what steps Council will be taking to eradicate the problems to which I refer above”,

I feel that your response, “Any incidences of these prohibited activities occurring on the beach should be reported to the Rangers”, does not answer my questions. It also seems to suggest that the onus for the administration of laws and regulations should be on the citizen and not the State, Council or their instrumentalities. I am sure Council would not expect this to be so, so I reiterate my questions, with the hope that I will receive an answer.

Thank you very much.

Yours sincerely,

Philip Wilson

Letter to the Coffs Coast Advocate, August 15, 2005

Dear Editor,

After more than a year of my fruitless letters to Coffs Harbour Council about the hundreds of obviously dangerous sharp, rusty iron straps surrounding Sandy Beach, I have decided to ask the Coffs Coast Advocate if they will take up this matter before some child or adult is maimed or killed.

Thank you,

Pip Wilson
