One of the earliest of the many Australian anti-war rallies taking place this weekend occurred at 10am, Australian Daylight Savings Time at Bellingen, New South Wales, Australia.
An estimated 2,500 people attended the rally at the town's sportsground, where they were entertained by The Bushbombs, an 'a capella' group of singers who sang original songs as well as a traditional welcome tune from Nigeria.
Bellingen, a small rural community, nestles in the Bellinger (spelt thus) Valley about 15 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean. The population of the Bellingen Shire is 12,000 people scattered over a wide farmland and forested area of 54,000 hectares, with 2,600 people residing in the township of Bellingen itself. Its main industries are dairy farming, other agriculture, tourism, and arts and crafts. The rally was about as large as the town in terms of population.
