Protest: 750 Australian women naked for peace before Iraq War

Byron Bay, Australia
February 8, 2003

Welcome from the north coast of New South Wales, Australia

I got this photo somewhere on the WWW during the days of the protest of the imminent invasion of Iraq.

I do not own the copyright and want no personal gain for it. I am taking the liberty of publishing it here (in good faith and 'fair use' but without permission, because I do not know its source, but I think it is from the BBC*) for the following reasons:

1) As my own protest against war;

2) To promote imaginative methods of direct action and art against war;

3) Because the demonstration took place quite near my home town; in my excitement I wrote an editorial about it on the day it was happening, February 8, 2003.

4) Because when I first found the photo, and for the above reasons, I posted it to various Independent Media sites which encourage free publishing. The invasion of Iraq was imminent and I was campaigning day and night to help its prevention. However, I didn't keep the photo on my site for very long. Since then, my site www.wilsonsalmanac.com has been getting several hits a day from people searching for the photo, and I feel badly that so many people come here looking for it. So I have placed it here where, I hope, people will find it and be inspired by what the women of Byron Bay did.

I would be just as happy to remove the photo, but I think it is still speaking to people against war. So if you are the copyright owner, I hope you will accept the above reasons for my use of your excellent photo, and if you wish me to remove it, please email me (my address is in the menu bar at top) and I will do so immediately. No harm or personal gain was intended. If you would like it to stay here, of course I will be happy to provide the credit you require. Many people have seen the picture and I believe that they have been touched and inspired by it as I have.

Protest: Sydney Australia women naked for peace

Sydney, Australia
March 2, 2003

More than 300 women use their naked bodies to spell out 'No War' on a sports field in Sydney, Australia.

Australians bare all in anti-war protest

More than 700 women have posed nude in Australia in a mass protest against their country's support for possible military action against Iraq.

The naked demonstrators, aged 20 to 60, used their bodies to form the words "No war" on the side of a hill in Byron Bay, New South Wales.

Protesters said they would use aerial photographs of the stunt to publicise opposition to the government's policy on Iraq.

Australia has sent troops to the Gulf and approved the deployment of fighter planes in support of the US military build-up in the region.

The naked demonstration came on the same day as a similar protest in New York, where about 30 women stripped off in the snow to form the words "No Bush" - an irreverent reference to US President George W Bush.

Public anger

The organiser of the Byron Bay protest, Grace Knight, said the women wanted Australian Prime Minister John Howard to recall forces from the Middle East.

New Yorkers staged a similar protest

"They're desperate to let our prime minister hear how very, very angry they are at what he's doing and how much they disagree with what's happening," she told Australian radio.

The protest came as Mr Howard set off for the United States for talks on the Iraq crisis with Mr Bush.

Australian opinion appears sharply divided over the country's role in the Iraq crisis.

There were angry public protests when Australia deployed its troops last month, while the Australian Senate on Wednesday passed an historic no-confidence motion against Mr Howard over his handling of the crisis.

Protests against Australian military involvement were also held on Saturday in the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland.
